Both materials wrap the same velvet-wrapped MDF or PU-leather shell construction, but they send different signals about a brand, and they perform differently over time.

Velvet has a soft, low-nap texture that reads as traditional and romantic — the classic jewelry-case look most consumers associate with an engagement ring. Leatherette’s rigid internal frame holds its shape better under repeated handling and resists corner-crushing in a display case. Velvet is more prone to showing wear at the seams over months of daily handling, though it remains fully serviceable for the life of a typical retail or gifting cycle.

Both materials take foil stamping and laser engraving cleanly. Leatherette adds a third option — a blind deboss with no color at all — which velvet’s nap texture can’t hold as crisply.
